What is the difference between EDT, EDP and Parfum?
"A perfume is more than an extract; it is a presence in abstraction. A perfume, for me, is a mystique." popularly quoted by Giorgio Armani.
Perfumes have been spreading the essence of aroma ever since the inception of human civilization. Earlier, people used oils and raw flowers to invocate the quintessence of smell. Today, shopping for new perfume can be overwhelming with all the scents available.
Many scents are available, and many different fragrance concentrations are also available. Perfumes with a higher fragrance concentration contain more perfume oils and less alcohol. Fragrance concentrations are broken into categories, including parfum, eau de parum, eau de toilette, to name a few.
Parfum
Parfum, also known as extrait de parfum or pure perfume, has the highest fragrance concentration. Parfum contains 15-40% concentrated perfume oil, making it the most concentrated of all perfume types. This is also the reason for it being the most expensive of all. Amongst all scents, parfums last the longest, usually six to eight hours. Parfum generally also commands the highest price of all the fragrance types due to the high concentration. People with sensitive skin may do better with parfums as they have far less alcohol than other fragrance types and are not as likely to dry out the skin.
Eau de Parfum
After parfum, eau de parfum (EDP) has the next highest concentration of fragrance. Eau de parfum generally has a 15% and 20% fragrance concentration. On average, eau de parfum will last for four to five hours. It is also typically less expensive than parfum, and while it does have a higher concentration of alcohol than parfum, it is better for sensitive skin than other fragrance types. Eau de parfum is one of the most common fragrance types suitable for everyday wear.
Eau de Toilette
Eau de toilette (EDT) has a 5% and 15% fragrance concentration. It is cheaper than eau de parfum and is one of the most popular fragrance types available. EDT fragrance will generally last for two to three hours. Some consider eau de toilette for daywear, while eau de parfum is considered nightwear. The term eau de toilette came from the French term "faire sa toilette," which means getting ready. EDT perfumes are usually more affordable than EDP because the concentration is lower than EDP.
The fragrance has the power to take over our emotions, setting the mood, be it a professional, romantic, or some nostalgic moments. Every person has a favorite fragrance that his olfactory center recognizes. Always choose the right perfume for the right occasion!
